We believe that being informed about the health of your dog supports thoughtful breeding decisions and empowers owners to provide the best possible care throughout their dog’s life. Health testing is a non-negotiable component of any responsible breeding program, and transparency in results is essential.
Equally important is a deep understanding of pedigree health, common breed-related conditions, and how health trends present across generations. This broader knowledge serves as a north star when evaluating results and allows breeders to thoughtfully leverage less-than-perfect findings through careful matchmaking, rather than viewing health data in isolation.
Health testing is a tool, not a verdict. Perfect results alone do not determine breeding quality, nor do less-than-perfect results automatically disqualify an otherwise exceptional dog. Even dogs with ideal health clearances can and do experience health challenges, and in a rare breed such as the Borzoi, it is critical to avoid unnecessarily narrowing the gene pool by discarding valuable dogs without careful consideration.
We use health testing as a benchmark for informed decision making and as a guide for providing our dogs with the highest level of individualized care and quality of life. Results help shape how we manage, condition, and monitor each dog, both within our breeding program and as lifelong companions.
We strongly encourage all Borzoi owners, whether they intend to breed or not, to remain informed about their dog’s health and to commit to routine health testing in accordance with Borzoi Club of America recommendations and OFA guidelines. Responsible stewardship of the breed begins with knowledge, transparency, and a long-term commitment to the dogs entrusted to us.
